What Is Direct-to-Film
Printing — and Why Ink Matters
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is a modern garment decoration method that prints designs onto a PET film, applies a hot-melt adhesive powder, cures the film, then heat-transfers the finished print to fabric. DTF works on virtually any fabric — cotton, polyester, nylon, blends — with no pre-treatment required. The ink is the most critical variable in the entire process.
DTF inks are printed in reverse onto a special PET film using CMYK + White layers. The white ink layer acts as an opaque underbase, enabling vibrant color on both light and dark fabrics. DuPont Artistri P1600 inks are precisely calibrated for this step — delivering accurate color and consistent film adhesion.
While the ink is still wet, a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the film surface. The quality of the ink layer directly affects powder adhesion consistency and the final transfer durability. DuPont Artistri inks are engineered for optimal powder bonding chemistry.
The film is cured in a conveyor dryer, then heat-transferred to fabric using a heat press. The result is a soft, flexible, full-color print that adheres permanently to the garment. DuPont Artistri P1600 inks are tested for 90+ wash cycle durability through this full process.
Standard CMYK DTF systems are limited in their color gamut. DuPont Artistri P1600 adds Orange (P1660) and Green (P1675) to the standard CMYK + White set — expanding the printable color range to achieve more accurate skin tones, vivid brand colors, and naturalistic hues that CMYK alone cannot reproduce.
One of DTF's core advantages over screen printing and DTG is fabric versatility. DuPont Artistri P1600 inks are formulated for excellent adhesion and durability across cotton, polyester, nylon, and cotton-polyester blend fabrics — giving decorators maximum flexibility across their product lines.
